41 Tips to Deal with Loneliness

Aloneness and loneliness are not the same. While the former is positive, the latter is negative. While you actually enjoy the former, the latter makes you feel miserable. When you are alone, you feel alive, happy, joyous, fully present, and overflowing with love. When you are lonely, you feel incomplete, unhappy, and needy.

You don’t have to waste your life feeling lonely when you can actually enjoy the “bliss of solitude” as William Wordsworth put it in one of his poems.

The next time you feel lonely, you may consider one or many of these 41 tips to deal with loneliness.

  1. Understand that you aren’t really alone. The world is teeming with life.
  2. Stop thinking about how lonely you are and make a to-do list. Now do all those things one by one.
  3. Get a pet. Animals can actually change your life.
  4. You are not the only lonely person out there. Find others like yourself and interact with them.
  5. Make a list of people in your life. Now call them, write to them, post on their Facebook timelines, send them a Whatsapp message, or arrange a meeting with one of them.
  6. Join online communities. Open accounts at social networking sites.
  7. Make a list of things you love doing and start doing them.
  8. Join a gym.
  9. Learn something totally new.
  10. Do you have any big dreams? Start converting them into reality. Take that first small step.
  11. Write down your thoughts and feelings in a diary. Your diary will soon be your best friend.
  12. Say no to TV, drugs, oversleeping, alcohol, and comfort eating.
  13. Do you think it would be a good idea to commit suicide? If so, fix an appointment with a therapist immediately.
  14. Attack those negative thoughts and replace each of them with a positive thought.
  15. Make a list of your interests and find people with similar interests. For example, book lovers can join a book club.
  16. Do you care for something? Start doing something about it. For example, if you love animals, you can volunteer at an animal shelter.
  17. Head over to really crowded places such as parks, beaches, and temple or church fairs. Get jostled a bit.
  18. Catch a stranger’s eye and smile at him/her.
  19. Have a long conversation with a total stranger. Yes, it is possible.
  20. Plunge into a relationship. Make the first move even if you are scared of being rejected.
  21. Get interested in other people and their activities.
  22. Go to a moderately crowded place and watch people.
  23. Read plenty of newspapers, blogs, and magazines as it will give you something to talk or write about.
  24. Stop bothering about what others think about you. It really doesn’t matter.
  25. Stop thinking that you don’t have a best friend. Realize that you are your best friend. Do unto yourself what you want others to do to you.
  26. Smile even if you don’t feel like it. It doesn’t matter if you look a bit weird.
  27. Draw a few random pictures. Draw a few smilies. Or just doodle. It will lift your mood.
  28. If you are in a crowd, talk to people. You don’t have to say anything great.
  29. Buy yourself some attractive clothes and take yourself on a date.
  30. Attend meetings. Grab all opportunities to meet people.
  31. Watch a movie.
  32. Grab your backpack and camera and go somewhere. It doesn’t matter where. Just jump into any bus or train.
  33. Do something absolutely crazy. For example, you could dress up as a clown and take selfies.
  34. Go jogging.
  35. Go out of your house, smile at the first neighbor you meet, and make a random comment about the weather.
  36. Turn out those cupboards and throw away or donate things you don’t need.
  37. Spring clean your house and then take a long bath.
  38. Take lots of photos. Capture all those beautiful scenes around you in your camera.
  39. Make a list of things you are really grateful for.
  40. Imagine you have a million dollars and make big plans. If you are not smiling at the end of this exercise, I will eat my hat.
  41. Take some time to think about others. See the world from their point of view.
